growth for diamond industry

Beers has reported that 2004 was a good year for the diamond industry.
It said that global retail sales of diamond jewellery for the year
as a whole were about 6% higher that the previous year, and because
of the continued weakening of the US dollar, about 8% higherin US
dollars. The Group reported headline earrings for the year ended
31 December 2004 were US$652 million, 11% higher than for 2003. "No
Dirty Gold" campaign Valentine's sales of gold jewelry
in the US will leave in their wake more than 34 million metric tons
of waste worldwide, according to estimates from Earthworks and Oxfam
America, leaders of a major consumer campaign aimed at changing
the way gold is produced and sold. The estimates are based on gold
sales in the first two weeks of February. The "No Dirty Gold"
campaign, which is celebrating its first anniversary, has targeted
gold sales because gold mining is arguably the dirtiest industry
in the world and most of the gold mined worldwide is used for jewelry. GFMS reveals analysis
GFMS Limited, a London based precious
metals consultancy, has released an analysis of the UK's gold jewellery
market. It has recently been reported, says GFMS, that gold is losing
its status and that the modern British jewellery lover is someone
who drapes their body with "worthless 9K gold." GFMS says
that these reports are too simplistic, and reflect a misunderstanding
of the market's structure and the profile of the typical consumer. CIBJO

market. He was speaking recently at JUNWEX, the 13th International
Jewellery exhibition, in St.Petersburg Russia. Mr. Cavalieri attened

In an effort to meet worldwide demand
for its diamond grading reports and other laboratory services, the
Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is expanding both its US
East and West Coast laboratory locations. Construction has begun
at the headquarters in New York, and at the Institute's Carlsbad,

The international Colored Gemstone Association, headquartered in New York City but operating additional "Gembureaus" from in Idar-Oberstein and Israel, is the nonprofit trade association that represents the international colored gemstone industry, a small but extremely important and influential segment of the jewelrybusiness. ICA boasts nearly 500 members, the greatest concentration of which is in the USA, Thailand and India; additional members are found throughout the world, from Europe to South America and from China to Africa.

a tradition established in 1990, Christie's
recently organised an auction of important jewellery, gemstones
and wristwatches at the Palace Hotel in the famous ski resort of
St. Moritz. From the 476 lots offered, 360 were sold, resulting
in a total sale price of US$ 12,622,957. True
