diamonds turnaround
Israel Diamond Institute (IDI) Chairman
Simcha Lustig expressed satisfaction at figures for March, 2006
which showed a rise in polished exports and imports, after declines
in the first two months of 2006. "I believe thaat the March
figures spell a turnaround for the Israeli diamond industry,"
He said. Net polished diamond exports from Israel rose 6.4% in March
2006, reaching US$672 million, compared to US$631.6 million in March
2005, according to statistics from the Israeli government. Since
the begining of 2006, net polished diamond exports had decreased
by 2.6% to US$1.901 billion. Dubai's
rough diamond
The total trade in rough diamonds
in Dubai grew by a record 46.25% in 2005, to US$3.734 billion, up
from US$2.553 billion in 2004 according to the Dubai Diamond Exchange(DDE),
a subsidary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC). Dubai
exported diamonds valued at US$2.248 billion in 2005, while imports
for same period touched US$1.484 billion. In terms of carat value,
imports of rough diamonds stood at almost 37 million carats in 2005,
while exports from Dubai reached over 34 million carats, bringing
the total volume traded to more than 71 million carats. Dubai's
major trading partners for rough diamonds include India, Europe,
China, and Russia, "The UAE is one of the largest trading centres
in the world for rough diamondsand is ideally located within the
GDC region, which is the third largest consumer of diamond jewellery
in the world, after the US and Japan," said Dr. David Rutledge,
Chairman of Dubai Diamond Exchange. US rich spending In 2004 the number of US affluent
households grew 8.4% from 27.9 million affluent households in 2002,
according to Unity Marketing's new "Luxury Report 2006: Who
Buys Luxury. What They Buy, Why They Buy." Among the Affluent
market the segment with the highest income also grew faster than
any other. The super-affluents, those with incomes of US$150,000
and above, grew 18.1% from 2002 to 2004 to reach 6.6 million households,
more than twice as fast as the affluent market overall. Canada rids itself The
Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) has rid itself of the Jewellery
Excise Tax effective May 2, 2006. "We are delighted that the
Conservative government has ended the inequity and confusion inherent
in the Excise Tax the content of Minester Flaherty's Budget,"
said Morris Robinson, Chair, CJA Government Relations Committee.

HRD Antwerp High Diamond Council announced the Election of a new
board of directors. For the first time in the history of the organization
, the new diamond dealer representatives on the board were elected by
the dealers themselves. This announcement comes after a period of
upheaval, which led the umbrella organization to restructure its
board. The elections mark the first phase of that restructuring,

Artic colored gemstone
The
long-promised diamond boom has finally come to the Arctic in its
wake newly recognized prospecting for colored gemstones and semi-precious
stones. Canada's diamond mining industry in particular has gone
from zero production five years ago to US$1.3 billion a year now,
making the country the world's third largest producer of rough diamonds
by value. Only Russia and Botswana are still ahead, and it likely
that Canada will surpass the former within two years. Princess
