Thai gem cutting contest

The Jewel Fest Club, in cooperation with the Thai Gem & Jewelry Traders Association, has organized the Gem Cutting Contest 2004.
Antwerp bourse centenary

Belgium's Crown Prince Filip and his wife, Princess Mathilde, made a visit to antwerp recently to join the city's diamond community in celebrating the centennial of the Beurs voor Diamanthandel, which was officially established on June 7, 1904.
De Beers settles case
De Beers has reached a settlement with the United States Department of Justice for the resolution of a long-standing case against the company. The case related to a 1994 charge connected to the price list for industrial diamonds from sometime in 1991 through 1992. In its settlement, De Beers agreed to plead guity and pay a fine of US$ 10 million.
Congo diamonds scratched
The Canadian Chair of the Kimberley Process has issued a revised list of Kimberley Process Participants from which the Republic of Congo has been removed. The measure was taken after a review mission to the Republic of Congo concluded that the country was not complying with the provisions of the certification scheme.
Canada hosting CIBJO 2005
The Canadian city of Vancouver BC will be the site of the annual congress of CIBJO - the World Jewellery Federation in 2006. The announcement was made by Catherine Sproule,
the executive director of the Canadia Jewellers Association, which will be the host for the event. She was speaking during a reception held to pormote the CandaMark trademark at the JCK Show in Las Vegas.
Leveiv for diamond meet
One of the world's largest cutters and polishers of diamonds, Lev Leviv, will be a guest speaker at the Couture Diamond Leadership Conference in New York on October 14, 2004.
GIA Communique
The Gemological Institute of America has expanded its global education services by opening a new education center in Mumbai, India. The Institute has selected Deepak Bagai, who holds a master's degree in geology and has completed GIA training in diamonds and diamond grading, as Directeor of GIA India.

"Sri Chintamai - New Designs 2005" is the forthcoming volume of new Astral Gemstone Talismans jewelry designs by Richard Shaw Brown, of the Bangkok atelier Hrisikesh Ltd.
Swarovski summer feelings
Swarovski launched its trends for Spring/Summer 2005 at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel, Bangkok recently. The occasion drew a large crowed of fashion forward guests, and included presentations on the latest Swarovski innovations for the spring and summer 2005 seasons. An application workshop allowed the guests an opportunity to experience Swarovski's sparkling new crystal creations at first hand.

GIA lab on treatments
GIA has made "considerable progress" in identifying diamond treatments and synthetics, but there are still challenges in researching the heat treatment of corundum with unusual color zoning, noted Sahne AcClure and Chris Smith of the GIA Gem Laboratory during their laboratory update presentations at the JCK Show in Las Vegas.
Quetzal at GIA

Award-winning jewelry designer Ziad Noshie of Houston, Texas, has created a specially designed piece for the Gemological Institute of America's Signature Collection. Titled "Quetzal," the piece honors the national bird of Guatemala with a life-size replica, made with more than 1,100 gemstones. It is on display in the GIA Museum.
Pauly - art of carving
The internationally acciaimed gem carver, Hans-Ulrich Pauly, displayed his work at the JCK Las Vegas Show, in the German section of the International Pavillion. His vast collection of gem art - - depicting floral and fauna, people, icons, and unlimited design possibilities to further carve their niche in the marketplace.
