reports strong growth in Asia-Pacific region At
its recent annual general meeting, Richemont SA announced that the
Group's sales growth in the period from June to August has returned
to more normal levels, reflecting the better performance seen in
the comparative period last year. For the full five months from

unveils new system The
American Gem Society (AGS) has launched its new fancy cut diamond
grading system. After five years of research and development, the
AGS is able to present the industry with a highly advanced system
that will cut grade fancy shape diamonds. Industry's reputation on
the line Ernest
Blom, from CIBJO, The World Jewellery Confederation, gave a speech
on the reputational risk to the diamond, gemstone and jewelry sectors,
and ways of countering it, at the recent International Jewellery
London trade show. the speech was entitled, "The jewellery
and gemstone sectors' ethical continum: Mitigating 'reputational
risk' throughout the chain of distribution." Platinum jewellery Johnson
Matthey has released its latest review of the world platinum markets
-- "Platinum 2004 -- Update 1." In the report, Johnson
Matthey said, "Platinum is set to move close to equilibrium
in 2004 -- it could even be in the position of a small surplus."
However, the report, the report also states that, "Purchases
of platinum during the first half of this year by the Chinese jewellery
trade were 15 to 20% lower than the same period in 2003." Johnson
Matthey also confirmed its previous forecast,"Chinese platinum
jewellery demand may well fall for the second year in succession
in 2004." Another finding disclosed in the report is that a
market for palladium jewellery has emerged in China, providing a

Myanmar formed the backdrop for a fascinating presentation by mineralogist
Dr George Rossman at the Gemological Institute of America. Titled
"Myanmar: A Journey to the Source of the Jade, "the address
was part of the Institute's 2004 Museum Lecture series, themed "Gems
and Jewelry Brought to Light."
