De Beers calls
Ahead of November’s meeting of the Kimberley Process in Botswana, Nicky Oppenheimer, chairman of De Beers Group, called for governments to be more proactive in the enforcement of diamond import and export controls and for countries to work together, with industry and NGOs, to help eradicate the last traces of the illegal trade in conflict diamonds....
Self purchases
A study by the Jewelry Consumer Opinion Council (JCOC) shows statistics of diamond purchases and expectations to buy for themselves outranking gift occasions. The study of 3,553 North American JCOC panelists, conducted over October 27-November 1, 2006, said 83% own diamond jewelry, with 68% buying diamonds for themselves. JCOC, a US and Canadian e-panel of consumers, is a division of MVI Marketing Ltd....

Amazon.com, Inc. said that its third quarter 2006 jewelry and watch sales increased more then 100% year-over-year. “We’re very excited about the growth in our Jewelry & Watches store,” said Steven Goldsmith, vice president, Amazon. Pioneering
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recently lost one of its founding fathers as G. Robert Crowning shield, gemologist, research scientist, and industry pioneer died at age 87 in New York. Former vice president of the GIA Laboratory, Mr. Crowning shield is considered the father of modern gem research in spectrometry. He was one of the original founders of the GIA Lab in New York. In 1997, the GIA formally named its research facility the G. Robert Crowning shield Gemological Research Laboratory.....
Women want pearls
More than half of the 2,942 respondents to a US Jewelry consumer Opinion Council (JCOC) study on pearls, conducted in October, report owning fine pearl strands and jewelry with the preferred retail venues to buy pearls being independent fine jewelry stores. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has received a carved natural jadeite sculpture of a leaping carp from Sophie Leu, who has made several jadeite donations to the Institute in recent years. The piece will be displayed as part of the Institute’s Museum Collection at the Robert Mouawad Campus in Carlsbad. The sculpture measures approximately 10.5 inches wide, 5 inches tall and 1.5 inches deep. In addition to the carp, it features lingzhi mushrooms and lotus flowers, leaves, and fruit.....
